Birmingham Airport

Is located 5.5 miles east south east of Birmingham city centre, at Bickenhill in the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull within the West Midlands. The airport is a base for Flybe, Monarch, Ryanair, Thomas Cook Airlines & Thomson Airways.

Whilst Flybe holds the most flights into & out of Birmingham, Monarch carry the most passengers, which will further be increased over the next 12 months with the introduction of a number of new routes & frequencies.

The airport offers both domestic flights within the UK, & international flights to destinations in Europe, the Middle East, Pakistan, North America & the Caribbean.

In 2014, an extension to the existing runway will permit direct coast to the west coast of Canada & the USA, & eastwards to the Far East.

Viewing Area

A viewing area is available in the long-term car park, affording good views of arrivals/departures & taxiing aircraft. The “facility”is little more than a few barriers pushed together, to form a cordoned off area, but as the new runway extension is built, this  is due to be moved to another location.

Travelodge Birmingham Airport

Without doubt, this hotel offers the best viewing opportunities of any of the properties located in & around the area.

A high floor, with a view of the airport, will, aided by an SBS, give you all that you could want.

That being said however, staff attitude & a total unwillingness to want to try & help you get in to such a room type, leaves a lot to be desired. A pity, as the location is so good.

Facilities for the property are basic, as you would expect from this chain, although there a bar area, as well as a restaurant that serves breakfast & a light evening meals. It does what it says on the tin & serves it’s purpose, without having to trek miles out of your way to find food & dribk.

You can park your car for a 24 hour period, for £7.50, which in the swing of things, isn’t too bad.

Holiday Inn

A low-rise building, which although it has rooms facing towards the terminal, will not give you the greatest of views, in the main due to there being trees that obscure the view.

If you do happen to stay here, then be warned, the cost of food & beverages is not cheap & it certainly isn’t plentiful.

Service from the front-desk is good, although the restaurant staff leave a lot to be desired, with many of them forgetting the very fact that they have guests to attend to.
